The company Mind & Soul Travel started when tourists that had been to Tanzania on a safari met us, and recommended us to their friends and the requests started coming in. We are located in Arusha town but both the office staff and the field staff are very familiar with the parks, the movements of the animals, the lodges, the mountain and the beaches. Both our office staff and the people out in the field are well versed in the parks, the lodges, the whereabouts and movements of the animals, Kilimanjaro and the beaches as well. You can ask us any questions and we will give you an honest and prompt answer. The most important person during your safari is the driver guide. Our guides have good education in managing African wildlife and at least eight years experience as tour guide. We speak Swahili, English, Scandinavian (mostly Swedish), German, Spanish and French.
Honey badger was established in 1999 by Mama Lucy Renju, and as of 2010 is being run by her son Joseph and his wife Jenny and their two children Izzy and Eli (seen below in our swimming pool!) Joseph has a background in international development and passionately believes in encouraging sustainable development by supporting communities to help themselves. In light of this in 2006 he set up his own non-profit organisation called SAIDIA Tanzania.Jenny has a background in public health and for the last 8 years has worked on large scale adolescent sexual and reproductive health projects. Like Joseph (her husband) she is driven by encouraging sustainable developments for those that need. Joseph and Jenny took over Honey Badger in February of 2010, both have previous hospitality experience and will continue to offer a genuine taste of African hospitality. Above and beyond this they are determined to merge the focus of the lodge with their passion in community development ensuring that Honey Badger Lodge and Safaris is a positive force within their community. This beautifully situated hotel, on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, stands in twelve acres of mature, well laid out gardens. It has a fine variety of exotic trees and flowering shrubs. From the gardens there are magnificent views to be had of Kilimanjaro, with its larger peaks of ice-capped Kibo and rocky Mawenzi. The oldest peak on the mountain, Shira, is much smaller and heavily eroded. Its remains are best viewed when climbing via the Machame or Shira/Lemosho routes. The hotel takes its name from the surrounding area. "Marangu" means "full of water" in the local Chagga language, and the lush green surroundings demonstrate the truth of this. The central hotel building was once a farm house, built in the early 1900s, and is of a charming, old world style. This is a family-run business, with the consequent attention to detail one expects. Guest accommodation is provided in cottages around the grounds. The cottages are of varied style, and each has its own character. Several cottages have integral central sitting rooms, which are popular with small groups travelling together. All rooms have private bathrooms with bath or shower.
