Kinyara Sugar Works Limited is one of Uganda’s leading sugar manufacturers and a major contributor to the country’s sugarcane-growing and agro-industrial sectors. Recognised for its significant role in domestic sugar production, the company operates an established manufacturing facility that processes locally cultivated sugarcane into high-quality sugar for the Ugandan market. Its integrated operations support agricultural development, industrial activity and employment, while contributing to the wider East African sugar industry.Located in Bujenje, Masindi District, in Uganda’s Western Region, Kinyara Sugar Works is situated approximately 17 kilometres west of Masindi town and 227 kilometres north-west of Kampala. The location places the factory within an important agricultural area, where sugarcane cultivation forms a vital part of the local economy. Through its processing operations and relationships with the surrounding agricultural community, the company plays an important role in connecting sugarcane production with large-scale industrial manufacturing. The Kinyara Sugar Works factory has historically reported an annual production capacity of more than 64,000 tonnes of sugar, processed from approximately 670,000 tonnes of sugarcane. Its principal product is known as Plantation White or Mill White sugar, a type of sugar produced through the milling process and suitable for direct consumption without additional treatment or refining, in accordance with applicable Ugandan quality standards. This product serves a variety of everyday needs, including household consumption, food preparation and applications within the food-processing and related industries. The factory operates an intensive production schedule, running continuously for 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for more than ten months of the year during the main operating season. To maintain consistent output and reliable plant performance, operations are organised around a rotating three-shift system. Production teams work alongside day-shift personnel, technical specialists and senior management to coordinate manufacturing activities, monitor equipment performance and maintain operational efficiency. The facility employs approximately 560 permanent workers, reflecting the importance of skilled personnel in sustaining its industrial operations. The factory’s activities are organised into two principal functional areas: Production and Engineering. The Production section oversees the processing of sugarcane and the manufacture of finished sugar, while the Engineering section is responsible for maintaining machinery, equipment and supporting systems essential to the plant’s operation. These departments work together to minimise interruptions, maintain production standards and ensure that equipment remains suitable for demanding, continuous industrial use. Planned maintenance shutdowns are also scheduled during the operating season to facilitate essential servicing, routine inspections and the replacement of worn components.Leading Sugar Producer in UgandaIn addition to routine maintenance, Kinyara Sugar Works undertakes a major annual out-of-crop maintenance programme, traditionally scheduled over approximately six to eight weeks during October and November. This period allows engineering teams to carry out more extensive repairs, equipment overhauls and preventive maintenance activities that would be difficult to complete while the factory is operating at full capacity. By combining continuous production during the crushing season with structured maintenance planning, the company works to improve equipment reliability and prepare the facility for the next production cycle.Through its sugar manufacturing activities, established workforce and links to Uganda’s agricultural sector, Kinyara Sugar Works Limited remains an important name in the country’s agro-processing industry. Its operations demonstrate the role that large-scale sugar manufacturing can play in supporting agricultural value chains, creating employment and supplying an essential commodity to domestic consumers and commercial users.Kinyara Sugar Works Limited – Transforming Uganda’s Sugarcane Harvest into Quality Sugar for Everyday Life.
